Why This Coin Matters

The London mint carried special weight in the Constantinian story. It was in Britain — at York, north of London — that Constantius I died in AD 306 and his troops proclaimed the young Constantine emperor, beginning the dynasty that would reshape the Roman world. When Constantine I elevated his eldest son Constantine II to Caesar and eventually allocated him the western provinces including Britain, Gaul, and Spain, the London mint became the primary production center for coins bearing the young Caesar's portrait — bronze that circulated through the very provinces where his grandfather had died and his father had first been proclaimed.

Constantine II was the first of Constantine's children to be porphyrogenitus — born while his father was already reigning emperor. He grew up in the full ceremony of Constantinian court life, surrounded by the pageantry of an empire that had been transformed by his father's religious and political revolution. The Christian empire was the only Rome he had ever known. After Constantine I died in AD 337, the inheritance seemed secure: three brothers, three territories, the dynasty continuing as planned.

The plan lasted three years. Impatient with his western allocation and convinced that primacy of birth entitled him to more, Constantine II marched into Constans's Italian territory in AD 340. His younger brother's generals responded with more tactical skill than Constantine II had anticipated. Near Aquileia, he was ambushed and killed — his short independent reign ending in the kind of fraternal violence that Constantine the Great had spent his career trying to prevent. This London bronze, graded NGC Fine with the honest wear of a coin that genuinely circulated through the western empire, was struck during the years that ambition was still building toward that fatal decision. Certified by NGC.
