Ancient bronze drachm from the kingdom historically associated with Elam, centered around the city of Susa in southwestern Iran. In the biblical Table of Nations (Genesis 10:22), Elam is listed as a son of Shem, linking the region to one of the earliest genealogical traditions preserved in Scripture.
Struck during the Elymaean period (post-Seleucid independence, 150 BCE–225 CE), this bronze reflects a localized continuation of Hellenistic monetary standards blended with strong regional identity. The obverse typically features a diademed ruler in profile wearing the distinctive Elymaean tiara — a tall and often elaborate headdress unique to these kings. The reverse commonly displays religious symbols such as a crescent moon and star, motifs associated with local cult traditions and celestial symbolism.
Susa later became a major Achaemenid Persian capital and appears in biblical narratives including Esther, Nehemiah, and Daniel. Positioned between Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau, the region functioned as a vital trade and cultural crossroads for centuries.
This bronze drachm represents an enduring link to an ancient Near Eastern kingdom whose legacy spans archaeology, regional power, and early biblical tradition.
