Why This Coin Matters
Few eras in history have captured the imagination like the Golden Age of Piracy.
During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Spain transported enormous quantities of silver mined in Mexico and South America across the Atlantic aboard heavily armed treasure fleets. These ships carried the wealth that fueled the Spanish Empire—and attracted the attention of privateers, naval powers, and pirates alike.
This authentic Spanish colonial half real circulated throughout that world.
Although modest in size, the half real was an everyday coin used by sailors, merchants, soldiers, settlers, and dockworkers from Havana to Veracruz, Cartagena to Cádiz. It passed through colonial marketplaces, crossed the Atlantic aboard merchant vessels, and changed hands in ports throughout the Caribbean.
Its designs commonly feature the royal arms of Spain or the famous Pillars of Hercules with the imperial motto PLUS ULTRA ("Further Beyond"), celebrating Spain's global empire and its overseas possessions.
Coins of this type circulated during the lifetime of Edward Teach—better known as Blackbeard—whose career reached its height between 1716 and 1718. His flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge, captured merchant ships carrying Spanish silver and other valuable cargo before running aground off the coast of North Carolina in 1718. While coins of this type were certainly part of the Atlantic economy Blackbeard operated within, individual examples are not associated with his shipwreck unless specifically documented.
This is more than an old coin. It is a genuine artifact from the age of pirates, treasure fleets, global commerce, and colonial adventure.
