This authentic bronze coin of Arcadius comes from the moment the Roman Empire permanently divided into East and West. Struck between AD 395–408, it represents the reign of the first independent Eastern Roman emperor—a turning point that marks the beginning of what we now call the Byzantine Empire.

The coin reflects this transition in its design. The obverse often shows Arcadius in a more stylized imperial portrait, moving away from classical Roman realism toward the frontal and symbolic style that would define Byzantine coinage. The reverse typically features Victory or religious imagery, blending traditional imperial authority with the growing influence of Christianity.

Struck in bronze (AE nummus), these coins circulated widely across the Eastern Empire, particularly from mints such as Constantinople. They were everyday currency during a time when the empire’s identity—politically, culturally, and religiously—was being reshaped.

Arcadius’ reign is closely tied to the early development of Christian devotion in the Eastern Empire. His daughter, Pulcheria, would later become one of the most influential figures in promoting the veneration of the Virgin Mary, helping to establish traditions that would define Byzantine Christianity. These developments would culminate in the formal recognition of Mary as Theotokos—“God-bearer”—at the Council of Ephesus in AD 431.

This is more than just a coin—it’s the beginning of Byzantium. A tangible connection to the moment Rome’s eastern half transformed into a new and enduring Christian empire.
