Why This Coin Matters
This authentic Anonymous Follis Class A1 was struck during the reign of John I Tzimiskes (AD 969–976), marking the beginning of one of the most famous coin series in Byzantine history.
Unlike most ancient coins, this issue does not feature the emperor. Instead, it presents a powerful facing portrait of Jesus Christ Pantokrator, shown with a cross-shaped halo, holding the Book of Gospels and raising His hand in blessing. The Greek letters IC XC identify Him as "Jesus Christ."
The reverse bears the remarkable inscription:
"Jesus Christ, King of Kings."
Rather than celebrating an earthly ruler, these coins proclaimed that Christ alone was the supreme ruler of the empire. This revolutionary design became the model for Byzantine bronze coinage for more than a century and remains one of the most recognizable Christian coin types ever struck.
For collectors of Byzantine, Christian, or medieval history, few coins better represent the faith and identity of the Eastern Roman Empire.
