Why This Coin Matters

Mattathias Antigonus II was the last king of the Hasmonean dynasty, the ruling house that emerged from the Maccabean Revolt and established a substantial period of Jewish self-rule in Judaea.

By the first century BC, however, Judaean politics were already deeply entangled with Roman power. Pompey had intervened in Judaea in 63 BC, and rival Hasmonean factions increasingly depended on outside support.

In 40 BC, Antigonus gained the throne with support from the Parthian Empire. At the same time, Rome backed Herod, whom the Roman Senate recognized as king. The result was several years of warfare over control of Judaea.

In 37 BC, Jerusalem fell to forces supporting Herod. Antigonus was captured and later executed on the orders of Mark Antony. His death ended Hasmonean kingship and cleared the way for Herod the Great’s rule.

It is therefore more accurate to call Antigonus the last Hasmonean king than the “last king of independent Judaea.” His reign represented a final Hasmonean bid for power, but it unfolded within a political landscape already shaped heavily by Roman and Parthian intervention.

This coin circulated during that struggle and provides a direct numismatic connection to the transition from Hasmonean rule to the Herodian kingdom that forms part of the political background to the New Testament era.
