Why This Coin Matters
Few rulers stand at a more pivotal moment in Biblical history than Mattathias Antigonus II.
He was the last king of the Hasmonean dynasty, the royal family that emerged from the Maccabean Revolt and restored Jewish independence after generations of foreign rule. For nearly a century, the Hasmoneans governed Judaea as both kings and high priests, preserving a period of Jewish self-rule between the great empires of the ancient world.
In 40 BC, Mattathias Antigonus seized the throne with support from the Parthian Empire, while Rome recognized Herod the Great as the rightful king of Judaea. Three years of bitter warfare followed before Jerusalem fell to Roman forces in 37 BC. Antigonus was captured and executed on the orders of Mark Antony, becoming the first king known to have been executed by the Romans.
His death brought the Hasmonean Kingdom to an end and marked the beginning of Herod the Great's reignβa transition that would shape the political world encountered in the opening chapters of the New Testament.
This authentic coin circulated during that extraordinary turning point, passing through the hands of people who witnessed the final years of independent Judaea. Few ancient coins connect so directly to the events that immediately preceded the birth of Jesus and the beginning of the New Testament era.
More than 2,000 years later, it remains a tangible connection to the closing chapter of the Maccabean kingdom and one of the most significant transitions in the history of the Holy Land.
