The Pontius Pilate NGC-Certified Prutah (AD 26–36) is one of the most historically and biblically significant coins of the Roman provincial era. Struck in Jerusalem under the authority of Pontius Pilate, Roman prefect of Judea, this small bronze coin circulated during the exact years traditionally associated with the public ministry, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The obverse typically displays three bound ears of barley, accompanied by an abbreviated inscription referencing Tiberius Caesar (IMP CΛSBAS), the reigning Roman emperor. The barley likely symbolized agricultural prosperity and may have resonated with the agrarian population of Judea. The reverse features a simpulum — a Roman ritual ladle used in religious ceremonies — alongside the inscription naming Pontius Pilate (PON TVS PILATVS). The presence of this Roman religious symbol reflects imperial authority and the tension between Roman governance and Jewish religious sensibilities.

As a prutah, this bronze denomination functioned as everyday small change in Jerusalem and surrounding regions. Coins of this type would have been used in market transactions, temple-related payments, and daily commerce during the Gospel era. While it cannot be directly tied to specific biblical events, it represents the exact currency in circulation when Jesus was tried and sentenced.

Certified by NGC Ancients, this prutah provides collectors with a tangible connection to a pivotal moment in world history. It is a modest coin in size, yet monumental in context — a relic from the governorship of the man forever associated with the Passion narrative.

Note: Coins shown are representative examples of the grade and type, not the exact specimen.
