Why This Coin Matters
This silver tetradrachm was struck under the authority of Tigranes II the Great, one of the most successful rulers of the ancient world.
Ascending the throne in 95 BC, Tigranes transformed Armenia from a regional kingdom into a powerful empire stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean. At its height, his realm controlled territory across modern Armenia, Syria, Lebanon, and parts of Mesopotamia, making him one of the dominant rulers of his age.
The obverse typically features the king wearing his distinctive Armenian royal tiara, a design unlike anything found on contemporary Roman coinage. The star and eagle motifs associated with his crown became some of the most recognizable symbols of Armenian royal authority.
The reverse depicts the famous Tyche of Antioch seated upon a rocky outcrop, holding a palm branch. Beneath her appears the river god Orontes swimming below. This design was inspired by one of the most celebrated sculptures of the Hellenistic world and reflected Tigranes' control of Antioch, one of the wealthiest and most important cities in the eastern Mediterranean.
These coins were struck during a dramatic period when Armenia stood between two great powers: Rome in the west and Parthia in the east. Tigranes battled, negotiated, and competed with both before eventually confronting the Roman general Lucullus and later Pompey the Great.
Today, the tetradrachms of Tigranes the Great are among the most important and desirable coins of ancient Armenia. They represent the high point of Armenian power and preserve the image of a ruler who briefly created one of the largest empires of his era.
