Why This Set Matters

These emperors belong to the generations in which the Roman Empire was increasingly governed through separate eastern and western courts. The death of Theodosius I in AD 395 marked the last time the entire empire was ruled by a single emperor, after which Arcadius ruled in the East and Honorius in the West.

The Western Empire did not fall immediately. It survived until AD 476, while the Eastern Roman Empire continued for nearly another thousand years. This set is therefore not a collection of the literal final Roman emperors; it is an introduction to the late Roman rulers and dynasties that shaped the world in which the Western Empire ultimately disappeared.
