On ancient copper-alloy coins, patina is the stable surface alteration that develops as the metal reacts with its environment over long periods.
It may be green, brown, black, red, or mixed. Ancient silver is more often described as toned, while soil and mineral deposits can sit on top of either metal without technically being the patina itself.
Patina can contribute greatly to a coin's appearance and surface preservation, but color alone does not prove age, authenticity, or where a coin was buried. Natural surfaces vary enormously, artificial patinas can be convincing, and some genuine coins have been cleaned or repatinated.
What Is Patina Made Of?
Copper and bronze react with oxygen, carbonates, chlorides, sulfides, moisture, and minerals in their surroundings. A stable patina is generally well adhered and changes slowly under proper storage conditions.

Green Patina
Stable green surfaces are common on ancient bronze and copper coins. Copper carbonates such as malachite can contribute green color, but many compounds are possible. A hard, coherent green surface may be perfectly stable; a pale powdery green area can indicate active corrosion. Texture and behavior matter more than color alone.
Brown and Black Patina
Brown, dark brown, and black surfaces occur frequently and can result from several different oxidation and burial processes. Artificial or Recreated Patina

What Is Bronze Disease?
Bronze disease is an active chloride-driven corrosion process that can continue damaging copper-alloy coins when moisture and oxygen are available. A common warning sign is pale or bright green powdery material that returns or expands after being removed or after a period of storage.
Stable green patina can also be light in color, so a photograph alone does not always provide a certain diagnosis. Suspected active corrosion should be kept dry, separated from unaffected coins, and evaluated by someone experienced in ancient-coin conservation. Scraping, polishing, or aggressively cleaning the visible spot can damage the coin without solving the underlying corrosion problem.
Should You Remove Patina?
Usually, no. Stable original surfaces are part of an ancient coin's preservation and appearance. Conservation may be appropriate when loose soil obscures detail, unstable deposits threaten the coin, or active corrosion is present, but the goal is preservation rather than making an ancient coin look new.
Harsh cleaning can strip stable surface layers, scratch the metal, expose porous underlying surfaces, or remove genuine detail. Tooling, smoothing, and artificial surface restoration are separate interventions and should be disclosed because they can materially affect collector desirability.
Does Patina Affect Value?
Yes, but it is only one factor. A smooth stable surface with strong eye appeal can make one example more desirable than another of the same type. However, rarity, type, condition, strike, style, provenance, historical interest, and collector demand can matter just as much or more.
There is no guarantee that a particular color will command a premium or hold value better. Collectors should evaluate the whole coin rather than buying a surface color in isolation.
