Certified vs. Raw Ancient Coins: Which Is Right for You?
Ask Ten Collectors and You'll Get Ten Opinions. The Honest Answer Depends on Where You Are in Your Collecting Journey.
One of the first decisions every new ancient coin collector faces is whether to buy certified coins or raw coins.
Ask ten collectors, and you will probably get ten different opinions. Some collectors won't buy anything that isn't certified. Others won't buy anything that's in a holder. Who is right? Honestly, both.
Like many aspects of ancient coin collecting, the answer depends on where you are in your collecting journey.
What Is a Certified Ancient Coin?
A certified ancient coin has been examined by a professional third-party grading service, such as NGC. Before encapsulating the coin, specialists evaluate its authenticity, attribution, strike, surface preservation, and overall condition before assigning a descriptive grade.
The coin is then sealed in a tamper-evident holder with an identification label. Collectors often refer to these holders as slabs. For many collectors, especially beginners, that extra level of confidence can be incredibly valuable.
Why I Recommend Certified Coins for New Collectors
If you are buying your very first ancient coins, I generally recommend starting with certified examples. Not because raw coins are bad. Far from it. I recommend certified coins because they allow you to focus on learning the hobby rather than worrying about authenticity or attribution.
Instead of wondering whether you have made a mistake, you can spend your time learning about emperors, mints, denominations, portraits, and history. Confidence is one of the greatest gifts a beginner can have.
Why Many Experienced Collectors Enjoy Raw Coins
Something interesting happens as collectors gain experience. The more genuine coins you handle, the more your eye develops. You begin evaluating style, strike, surface preservation, centering, eye appeal, and overall quality.
Eventually, many collectors become comfortable buying both certified and raw coins, choosing whichever format best fits the particular coin they are considering. Some enjoy handling raw coins directly. Some prefer photographing them without a holder. Others simply enjoy feeling a direct connection to the history in their hands. For many experienced collectors, it is simply a matter of personal preference.
Does a Holder Add Value?
Sometimes, but not always. In many cases, the holder doesn't change the intrinsic value of the coin itself. Instead, it may increase buyer confidence, make resale easier, provide professional attribution, or appeal to collectors who prefer certified examples.
Encapsulation also provides excellent physical protection during handling, shipping, travel, display, and long-term storage. For exceptional coins, certification may increase buyer confidence and broaden the pool of potential buyers. Some collectors also seek coins with exceptional grades or special designations, while others care only about the coin itself. Neither approach is wrong.
When Certification May Make Sense
There are situations where certification can be especially worthwhile. Perhaps you have purchased a beautiful coin that appears to be in exceptional condition. Perhaps you are considering selling an important coin in the future. Or perhaps you simply appreciate the added confidence, protection, and attribution that certification provides.
Certification is another tool available to collectors. Like every tool, it is most useful when used for the right reasons.
Why Every Coin Isn't Certified
This is something many new collectors don't realize. Professional certification costs money. Many dealers submit large batches of coins, spreading shipping, insurance, and administrative costs across hundreds of submissions. That helps keep the certification cost per coin much lower than it often is for an individual collector.
If you are submitting only one or two coins yourself, certification costs can represent a significant percentage of the coin's value. Individual submissions can also take weeks or even months depending on the service selected and current submission volume. For that reason, not every ancient coin makes financial sense to certify.
Your Opinion May Change
One thing I have noticed over the years is that many collectors change their preferences. Some begin with certified coins because they appreciate the confidence they provide. As their knowledge grows, they become comfortable purchasing raw coins as well. Others spend years collecting raw coins before deciding they prefer certified examples for certain purchases.
Many experienced collectors maintain collections that include both certified and raw coins, choosing whichever format best fits a particular purchase. That is one of the enjoyable parts of the hobby. Your collecting style evolves as your knowledge grows.
Neither Choice Makes You a Better Collector
One of the biggest misconceptions in the hobby is that certified collectors and raw collectors somehow belong to different camps. In reality, some of the world's most knowledgeable collectors prefer raw coins. Others prefer certified examples. Many enjoy both.
The holder doesn't make someone a better collector. Knowledge does.
My Advice to New Collectors
If you are just getting started, don't feel pressured to collect only certified coins or only raw coins. Start where you are comfortable. Learn. Ask questions. Handle as many genuine coins as you can. As your knowledge grows, your preferences will naturally evolve.
For me, certified coins are an excellent way to begin the journey. As your confidence grows, you may discover that you are just as comfortable appreciating a beautiful raw coin in your hand, or you may continue to enjoy certified coins throughout your collecting career. Both approaches are perfectly valid. Collect in the way that brings you the most enjoyment. The plastic doesn't make the collector. Knowledge does.
History wasn't just written. It was minted.
