The Taras (Tarentum) AR Didrachm (280–240 BC) is a brilliant silver issue from one of the most powerful and prosperous Greek colonies of Magna Graecia. Certified Mint State by NGC, this coin was struck at Taras in southern Italy during the era of the Pyrrhic War — a time when Greek cities of Italy were resisting the growing influence of Rome.

Taras was renowned for its cavalry and maritime strength, and both identities are beautifully captured in this didrachm’s design. The obverse typically features a dynamic horseman, symbolizing aristocratic prestige and the city’s elite cavalry tradition. Tarentine horsemen were famous throughout the Greek world for their skill and tactical innovation, representing the military pride of the colony.

The reverse depicts Taras, the city’s mythic founder, riding a dolphin across the sea. According to legend, Taras was the son of Poseidon and was miraculously saved from shipwreck by a dolphin. This imagery proclaimed Taras’ divine favor and maritime dominance in the Ionian Sea, reinforcing its role as a key trading and naval power.

Struck in silver as a didrachm — a significant trade denomination — this coin circulated widely in a region that stood at the crossroads of Greek, Italic, and emerging Roman power. For collectors, it represents the final flourishing of Greek independence in southern Italy — a silver testament to cavalry strength, naval supremacy, and the enduring legacy of Magna Graecia.
