Why This Coin Matters
Julian II was raised as a Christian in Constantine's imperial household — but in secret, he turned back to the traditional gods of Rome. When he seized sole power in AD 361, he made no attempt to hide it. He publicly restored pagan worship, reversed Christian privileges, reopened temples, and attempted to rebuild the philosophical and religious foundations that Constantine had dismantled. In a Roman Empire that had spent decades Christianizing, it was an act of extraordinary defiance.
He ruled for only 18 months. A gifted military commander and a genuine philosopher-king — his writings on Stoicism, theology, and imperial governance are still read and studied today — Julian died from a spear wound during a campaign against the Sasanian Persians in AD 363. With his death, the pagan restoration ended permanently. Every emperor who followed was Christian. The ancient gods of Rome never returned to the imperial throne.
This AE3 bronze was struck during those 18 months — the obverse bearing Julian's distinctive bearded portrait, styled deliberately in the tradition of philosopher-emperors like Marcus Aurelius rather than the clean-shaven Christian emperors who preceded him. It is one of the most historically loaded coins a collector can own — the final bronze of a world that was ending.
