When Emperor Severus Alexander was murdered by his own soldiers in AD 235, the Roman army abandoned centuries of imperial tradition. Rather than accepting a ruler chosen through dynastic succession or senatorial approval, the legions proclaimed their own commander emperor on the battlefield.

That commander was Maximinus Thrax.

Born in the frontier regions of Thrace to a humble family, Maximinus rose through the ranks by virtue of his military ability and imposing physical presence. Ancient writers claimed he possessed extraordinary size and strength, describing him as a giant capable of feats few ordinary men could match. While many of these stories were undoubtedly exaggerated, his coin portraits preserve the image of an unmistakably powerful man, with a heavy brow, broad jaw, and rugged features unlike those of almost any other Roman emperor.

His accession marked a turning point in Roman history. For the first time, the army alone had elevated an emperor without meaningful support from the Senate. The balance of power had shifted permanently. In the decades that followed, generals across the empire would repeatedly seize the throne through military force, plunging Rome into the era historians call the Crisis of the Third Century.

Maximinus spent his entire reign campaigning along the empire's frontiers. Remarkably, he never entered the city of Rome during his rule, governing instead from military camps as he fought Germanic tribes beyond the Danube. His heavy taxation and hostility toward the senatorial elite eventually provoked widespread opposition, and in AD 238, while besieging the city of Aquileia, he and his son were murdered by their own troops.
