Authentic NGC-certified bronze prutah from the Hasmonean Dynasty, struck between 135 and 37 BCE during the era of Jewish independence following the Maccabean Revolt. These small bronze coins — often referred to as “Widow’s Mites” — circulated widely in Judaea during the Second Temple period and represent the everyday currency of the Jewish people in the generations before Roman annexation.
Typically attributed to rulers such as Alexander Jannaeus, these prutot feature distinctly Jewish symbols. Obverse designs often include an anchor, cornucopia, palm branch, or lily — motifs associated with prosperity, stability, and national identity. The reverse generally bears a Paleo-Hebrew inscription naming the ruler, surrounded by a wreath border. The use of Hebrew script and local iconography reflects the autonomy and religious character of Hasmonean rule.
The prutah was the smallest bronze denomination in Judaea, making it the coin of daily marketplace transactions and Temple offerings. Its modest size and humble fabric contrast sharply with its profound historical and cultural resonance.
Encapsulated and certified by NGC for authenticity and preservation, this coin represents a tangible link to Jewish sovereignty in the Second Temple era — a powerful artifact from a defining chapter in ancient Near Eastern history.
