The Ardashir I Sasanian BI Tetradrachm (AD 223/4–240) marks the dramatic rebirth of Persian imperial power in the third century AD. Certified XF by NGC, this billon tetradrachm represents the earliest phase of the Sasanian Empire, founded by Ardashir I after overthrowing the long-ruling Parthian (Arsacid) dynasty. With this victory in AD 224, Ardashir did more than seize a throne — he established a new Persian superpower that would rival Rome for over four centuries.
The obverse features a bold portrait of Ardashir I wearing a distinctive Sasanian crown, proclaiming his authority as shahanshah — “King of Kings.” This centralized royal image contrasts with the more decentralized Parthian tradition and signals the consolidation of power under a revitalized Persian state. The reverse displays a Zoroastrian fire altar flanked by attendants, symbolizing the sacred flame central to Persian religious life. The fire altar was not merely decorative; it asserted divine sanction and intertwined monarchy with Zoroastrian state religion.
Although struck to a Greek tetradrachm weight standard, this billon issue reflects a cultural and political transition from Hellenistic influence toward distinctly Persian imperial identity. Graded Extremely Fine, the coin preserves sharp early Sasanian detail, offering exceptional clarity for this foundational period.
Ardashir’s success reshaped Near Eastern geopolitics, inaugurating centuries of Roman–Persian rivalry that would define late antiquity. For collectors, this tetradrachm is more than silver-copper currency — it is the launch point of Rome’s greatest eastern adversary and the rebirth of a Persian empire that would endure until the Arab conquests of the 7th century.
