The Apollonia Illyria Silver Drachm (229–100 BC) is a refined and historically significant issue from one of the Adriatic world’s most prosperous Greek colonies. Located near modern Fier, Albania, Apollonia flourished during this period under Roman protection while maintaining its Greek civic identity. This silver drachm reflects a golden age when the city served as a vital commercial and cultural bridge between Italy and the Balkan interior.

The obverse features the iconic image of a cow suckling her calf — a pastoral motif symbolizing agricultural abundance, fertility, and civic prosperity. The design speaks to the wealth generated by Apollonia’s fertile hinterland and thriving trade networks. The reverse presents a geometric stellate pattern enclosed within a square, accompanied by the city’s Greek ethnic inscription. This abstract yet precise design reflects the disciplined artistry of Hellenistic minting traditions.

Struck in silver to the drachm standard, this coin circulated widely as trusted trade currency across the Adriatic and inland routes. During this era, Apollonia benefited from Roman military oversight following Rome’s intervention in Illyria in 229 BC, enjoying security without losing its autonomy.

The city was also a noted intellectual center; even the future Emperor Augustus studied there. Though later diminished by natural disasters and harbor silting, Apollonia’s legacy endures through its coinage.

For collectors, this drachm represents a harmonious Roman-Greek partnership — a tangible relic from a thriving Adriatic hub of commerce, culture, and philosophy.
