In late 2022 and early 2023, Kinzer Coins consigned a group of 41 ancient Greek and Roman coins to Heritage Auctions. The group brought together coins associated with major figures of the ancient Mediterranean, from Alexander the Great and the Macedonian kingdoms to Julius Caesar and the final decades of the Roman Republic.

What Coins Were Included?
The Roman portion focused heavily on the late Republic and Imperatorial period, including issues connected with Julius Caesar and figures involved in the civil wars surrounding his assassination and its aftermath, including Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus, and Publius Servilius Casca Longus.
Coins from this era are especially revealing because money also carried political messages. Commanders and factions used inscriptions, portraits, divine imagery, ancestral references, and military symbols to advertise legitimacy and achievements while control of the Roman state was being contested.
Greek and Hellenistic Highlights
The Greek and Hellenistic portion included coins associated with Alexander the Great, Philip II of Macedon, Philip III Arrhidaeus, Cassander, Demetrius I Poliorcetes, Ptolemy I Soter, and Perseus of Macedon.
Alexander's coinage became one of the most influential monetary traditions of the Hellenistic world. His silver tetradrachms and gold staters were struck at numerous mints, and Alexander-type coinage continued after his death in 323 BC. Later Successor kingdoms adapted Macedonian imagery and monetary traditions to their own political needs.
