Kinzer Coins is proud to once again partner with one of the premier educational voices in ancient numismatics on YouTube, Classical Numismatics. In this latest episode, Leo highlights an exciting new addition to the Kinzer Coins inventory: a remarkable silver tetradrachm struck at the historic Greek city of Smyrna. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to pairing strong historical research with engaging storytelling, helping collectors move beyond simply owning a coin to truly understanding the world that produced it.
Struck between 150 and 142 BC, this Smyrna tetradrachm captures the fiercely independent character of the Greek polis during the Hellenistic period. At a time when powerful kingdoms shaped the broader political landscape, cities like Smyrna continued to assert their civic identity through their coinage. These silver issues were not only instruments of commerce but bold statements of pride, autonomy, and cultural continuity.
On the obverse, the coin features the goddess Tyche, the personification of Fortune and protector of the city. She wears a mural crown composed of battlements and towers, symbolizing the fortified walls of Smyrna and her guardianship over its people. This imagery reinforces the idea that the city’s destiny rested under divine protection while also celebrating its urban strength and stability.
The reverse displays an elegant oak wreath surrounding a Greek inscription that translates to “From the Smyrneans.” This powerful declaration clearly identifies the issuing authority and proclaims civic independence. The oak wreath, associated with endurance and strength, further emphasizes the resilience and unity of the community.
In this episode, Leo dives into the history, symbolism, and artistry of this exceptional coin, connecting its imagery to the broader story of Hellenistic civic life.
