This wonderful Tetradrachm struck at the Greek city of Smyrna between 150 and 142 BC shows some fascinating aspects about the fiercely independent nature of the Greek Polis

On the obverse, the goddess of Fortune, Tyche, wears a crown made out of the towers and walls of a city, as to represent she controlled the fortunes of its inhabitants

On the reverse, we have an oak wreath, with a gorgeous inscription that proudly proclaims their independence, saying "From the Smyrneans"
